Arts Thread

I am agraduate of the Northern School of Art with a BA (Hons) Textiles & Surface Design. I have a strong interest in digital drawing and printing as well as hand embroidery and embellishments. Not only that, but I hope with my time on this course I am able to expand into a creative career or that this course will aid me in getting a job I enjoy and wish to pursue.During my time on this course, I have had the wonderful opportunity to not only learn new skills but expand and develop my previous skills. One technique I had the opportunity to develop was my Photoshop skills and my digital pattern making skills. My tutor was able to teach me various ways of creating patterns (such as half drop, multi-directional and mirror repeats.) Alongside this I was also taught how to create industry style patterns and how to create designs that fit industry sizes and standards. When starting this course, I had already attended the UAL Extended Diploma Textiles & Surface Design at The Northern School of Arts Middlesbrough campus. On that course I was able to learn basic design skills and techniques which I was able to carry over to my degree level course, as mentioned previously.My current theme is 'Royal & Regality' which is a visual exploration of British Royalty and its ornate aesthetic. My final collection includes fabrics, wallpaper and cushions with designs all made for children’s interiors. This concept idea came after a trip to London during the holidays, where I was lucky enough to visit Buckingham Palace and explore some rooms inside and all the art and furniture within them. The idea of exploring royalty also came from my love of history and specifically royal history, as I have always had a love for learning history since I was a child. The reason behind choosing to explore British royalty is to look at the extravagance and the elegance that is has and the deep-rooted traditions within it. Part of my brief was to participate in group work on the lead up to my degree show. I was put in the first group whose key role was gather personal statements, show promotion and the degree show rota. I was tasked with gathering business stationary (business cards, CVs and invoices). From this I was able to learn how to work with others in a professional manner. I also had the role of sending follow-up emails to fellow students in preparation for the degree show. Overall, I am hoping my time on this course will have helped and prepared me for my future career. After university I am hoping to progress into a career in museums. Alongside my degree I have been a part of the Young Producers, who are a local youth group who work with young people and museums to bring a younger generation to museums. I am hoping with my time at both establishments and all the skills and experience I have learnt I can progress into a career in museums or a creative sector.
