About

YoRaRa is a visual artist born in Korea and currently working between Korea and the United States. Centering her practice in painting while extending into installation, sculpture, and video, she has developed a distinctive artistic language that embraces multiple media. Her work focuses on reinterpreting women’s lives and experiences through mythological and symbolic narratives, employing organic and vernacular materials to explore both traditional sensibilities and contemporary aesthetics. The recurring motifs of the egg and braided hair metaphorically embody themes of life, birth and cyclical renewal, as well as identity and human connection. By weaving together mythic imagination with spiritual and social resonance, her practice creates spaces that invite contemplation and offer a sense of healing.

This graduation thesis project began as an effort to recall women erased from history, women who were never given a voice. Korean jesa culture (a ritual honoring and remembering deceased ancestors) excludes women who failed to bear a son or could not fulfill their prescribed roles, denying them even this rite and erasing them from memory altogether. By imagining the lives and final moments of these nameless, vanished women, I seek to call them back, to speak with them, to comfort and remember them, an act of mourning and remembrance, restoring dignity to those who were silenced.
