Stephen Hawking once remarked that the creation of AI would be the most monumental event in human history, but it also carries the ominous potential of being our last. Fascinated by the concept of cyborgs and our tech-driven world, my Final Major Project delves into the intersection of humanity and technology. Drawing inspiration from science fiction, video games, and anatomical structures, I explore the captivating aesthetic of cybernetic organisms that seamlessly blend organic and mechanical elements. To emphasize the non-human nature of our future anatomy, I chose to focus on headwear, particularly the face and head. Through my embroidered pieces, crafted using hand techniques and materials like metallic threads, sequins, beads, and upcycled materials such as can lids, wires, and plastic tubes, I aim to create a visual contrast between organic and mechanical components. The intricate beading and manipulation of fabric evoke depth and texture, mirroring the layered complexity of cyborgs. By distorting facial anatomy, I convey my fantasy of human beings transcending their biological limitations and becoming something greater than what we are today. While AI offers potential benefits such as improved decision-making and healthcare outcomes, it also presents significant risks, including job displacement, cyber-attacks, and the creation of deepfakes that manipulate public opinion. Ultimately, the future of AI hinges on the moral and ethical values of its users. My embroidery work serves as a commentary on the transformative impact of technology, both positive and negative, as we usher in a new era and new forms of humanity. In contemplating our growing reliance on technology, I also hold hope for a future where the boundaries between man and machine blur. Although the future remains uncertain, my project seeks to establish a beautiful fragment of that future.
