Jacques Schiessl is a furniture designer and photographer based in Bavaria, Germany. In 2026 he graduated from HDK-Valand, Campus Steneby (University of Gothenburg) with a BFA in Wood Oriented Furniture Design. His work sits between the workshop and the screen physical objects, and the digital systems that let other people design them. He's drawn to the point where making something by hand meets the tools that make it accessible, and to the question of why we grow attached to some things and forget the rest.
It's Not That Hard; Designing the Furniture Experience
We own a lot and care about almost none of it. This project asks whether the way furniture is designed, made and owned can change that. Building on Enzo Mari's Autoprogettazione, I built a web configurator that generates a unique, structurally sound stool from standard hardware-store timber. Each person designs their own, then builds it by hand, with nails, at a shared event. It won't fix over-consumption, but it leaves people trusting their own hands.
