About

Hello, my name is maya. in my designs, I combine my two passions as an acrobat and fashion and accessories designer to create special innovative accessories and garments for movement and performative arts. my design process includes innovative digital technologies such as 3d body scanning, 3d modeling, and 3d printing with traditional craftsmanship techniques in organic materials such as veg-tan leather. thanks to the combination of different techniques I can achieve comfort and perfect fit of the pieces I create to the body and reduce a lot of waste in the process.

Human marionette by maya kaplan

The project explores the image of humans as puppets and the ability to express a unique voice and authenticity. Based on questions about freedom and humanity's right to operate independently and uniquely in the world, despite systems and limitations around us, I approach this project as a marionette with limited control over its fates. I designed a series of three human puppets presented as a show, which includes costumes and innovative accessories that shape the character's ability to move. I developed the marionette mechanism in which the limbs are connected, and the movement is controlled by the limbs. In the performance, the marionette uses the fact of being bound to discover a new axis of movement. The designs range from organic to mechanical. All parts are screwed into the garment, serve as body shells, and are interchangeable. Traditional craftsmanship in vegetable leather was combined with innovative technologies such as 3d modeling, printing, and scanning to create a perfect fit and comfort for the moving body. The patterns are taken from my childhood paintings that have been manipulated and distorted and reflect an individual's exposure from infancy to reality. the project also takes place at the digital world as AR filters
