The Hawser Bed started with a desire to design a bed frame that broke out of a rectilinear construction and flowed from one transition to another. Having previously employed papercord in the more standard role of a chair seat, I was eager to take advantage of its properties to flex, mold, and support in the context of a headboard. As the project evolved, themes I had begun to explore in my thesis emerged in the design, specifically that of the approach. Approach is the first point of interaction and the subsequent unfolding. There are many elements of approach- invitation, mystery, anticipation, and tension that exist within this piece, but it is the approach that cues a moment of reprieve I seek to imbue in my work. I continued to refine the components of the bed until I had created a piece that beckons to those in its presence. A hawser is a thick rope or cable intended for mooring or towing; it is a means of anchoring, yet possesses a latent energy.
