GFW Childrenswear award shortlist 2021 GIRLHOOD is a mini collection inspired by the memories that I have of my own childhood and the clothing that I wore. It originally started out as a womenswear collection but has since evolved into childrenswear in the form of a mini me collection. Looking through my childhood photos was where a large portion of my research came from, they inspired everything from silhouette to print design which utilise motif prints of some of my most loved childhood toys. I want this to evoke a feeling of nostalgia within the adult consumer. It is important to me that this collection reflects the fun carefree attitudes we all hold as children, using the saturated pastel colour palette, fun motif prints and youthful silhouettes to show that playful clothing can be suitable for any age. I looked at using different crafting techniques that I used to enjoy as a child to create elements of these garments, specifically looking at knitting and creating plastic motifs with hama beads. I wanted this to give the collection a handmade, childlike feel to really play into the concept. I think these textures are also tactile and sensory which will be stimulating for children, whilst also being a unique detail to the collection.
