Already as a child, I was fascinated by traditional crafts, the days spent on my grandparents’ farm, and the felting afternoons using sheep’s wool from our village. What connects these interests is, above all, my enthusiasm for traditional craft practices, regional activities, and their role in shaping cultural identity.In my written research, I explored how traditional crafts can continue to exist in the present and what role design can play in this process.I pursued the following question: How can Bernese folk pottery evolve between tradition and contemporary practice without losing its cultural and design identity?Bernese folk pottery serves as the starting point and source of inspiration for my project. With sensitivity and social responsibility, I investigate how this craft can be situated in a contemporary context and what creative and social potential it holds. Is it at risk of disappearing? Perhaps. At the heart of the project is the dialogue between resources, materiality, and traditional production techniques.My personal aim is for the design work to function as an intergenerational transfer of knowledge and to situate Bernese farmhouse ceramics within a contemporary context. I see myself as a mediator between craft tradition, communication, and design. The design process is intended as an act of mediating, contextualising, and preserving.
