About

Yennie is an illustrator based in London from Hong Kong; graduated with first-class honours for illustration (BA Hons) at the University of Edinburgh. She loves working with both digital and traditional art-making tools. With the mixed cultural background and her fascination with traditional Chinese cultures and heritage like Chinese ink paintings, Gong-bi Hua, Chinese propaganda posters and Dunhuang murals, Yennie aims to share her perspectives and tell stories using flowing lines, vibrant colours with urbanised textures & intricate details. Her particular interest and dedication to the conservation of Chinese Intangible Heritage (ICH) arts and crafts have allowed such elements to be seen in her works. The ICH arts and crafts also threaded through her final year projects, in which she researched about Chinese shadow puppetry (piying), traditional Chinese hairpin-making (chanhua) and showcased her self-interpreted ways of making and presentation with modern materials and context. Yennie enjoys making illustrations for magazines, newspapers & social media (editorial), advertising & packaging, books & publishing, and merchandise & crafts. She loves to fill her life with challenges and commitments. She is detail-oriented and always works ahead of deadlines!

Beauties of china

These illustrations and related merchandise were created based on my research about historical Chinese fashion & cultures during different dynasties. I was trying to depict ladies from Han, Tang, Song, Ming, Qing & Minguo. The female roles in society and the popular hobbies of different periods varied; there were also factors that impacted their appearances.
