Jiwon Kang is a media artist whose practice explores how digital technologies shape the ways we remember, perceive, and understand ourselves. Working with personal data, computational systems, and digital traces, she examines the relationship between machine-generated representations and lived human experience, questioning what is preserved, transformed, or lost when life is translated into data.Her work spans generative media, data visualisation, interactive systems, and immersive installations, transforming intangible datasets into sensory and spatial experiences. Rather than treating data as objective information, Kang approaches it as a material that carries fragments of memory, emotion, and identity. By exposing the tensions between computational logic and subjective experience, her work invites audiences to reconsider the human narratives embedded within digital infrastructures.Her research investigates new artistic approaches to data, materiality, and immersive media, with a particular interest in how technology can reveal, rather than obscure, the complexity of human experience.
A Form of Extraction began in response to a major personal data breach involving a large South Korean e-commerce platform. The incident prompted me to reclaim five years of my purchase records from the platform, turning data originally collected and retained by a commercial system into the material for the work. Through the materialisation of this personal purchasing data into generative digital sculptures, the project traces a self that has been extracted, separated, and replicated within digital systems. It questions the extent to which data can embody human identity and become a new form of portraiture in the digital age.
