About

Camille Ashkenazi is a mixed media artist from Alexandria, Virginia. She briefly studied sculpture at the Savannah College of Art and Design, but eventually realized her techniques were more aligned with fibers. With a background in both fields, she tries to incorporate these two loves into her work to find a place where they meet in the center. Inspired by her passion for classical and contemporary art, Ashkenazi wishes to createfloating “paintings” using mylar from foil balloons. Each is hand-sewn together with thread, transcending the original purpose of the medium. Her work is done on a larger scale since its intended location requires the audience to look up high towards the ceiling, given the nature of its balloon-like structure.

Higher Purpose is a culmination of techniques that I have been experimenting with since 2020. It is a collection that comes in the form of floating “paintings” made out of mylar sourced from foil balloons. Each of them are hand-sewn together with thread, allowing me to transcend the original purpose of the medium. My work is done on a larger scale since its intended location requires the audience to look up high towards the ceiling, given the nature of its balloon-like structure. These photographs of my work were shot by Meggie Phelan Photography and modeled by Addison Yocom.
