About
Alejandro Aguirre is from Denver, Colorado, and is a graduate student at parsons school of design - photography. He is a US Green Beret and was a USPS rural carrier for close to 17 years, living an unexceptionally exceptional life. Life at the office can be mundane and purposeless, but it can also be adaptive, fulfilling, and purposeful. Postal routes have shaped my photographic perspective, illuminating the subtle changes in everyday existence and enhancing my ideas of light as transformative, process as poetry, and communication as privilege. All these features play heavily in my photography and help me depict stories that are unfolding and seemingly unfinished. In my photography, nostalgia, and its symbols access the collective through the inanimate, integrating space by collapsing time into a reconstructive framework, known as Mental Time Travel (MTT).
New York is a city comprised of idiosyncratic communities and cultural flavors that are expressed through the hyper-localized small business. These five businesses are a snapshot, revealing age-old processes in a contemporary time. Without an aire, intergenerational knowledge will evaporate like the footprint of local businesses across America. To pay homage to the craftsmanship and dedication of these small business owners - this project is photographed with medium format film photography, printed, and showcased in a larger-than-life setting (large-scale print) to highlight their significance and their demise.
