The Redress Design Award is the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition. Organised by Redress, the competition works to educate emerging fashion designers around the world about sustainable design theories and techniques to drive growth towards a circular fashion system. By putting sustainable design talent in the global spotlight, the competition creates a unique platform for passionate and talented fashion game-changers to transform the global fashion industry and rewards the best with career-changing prizes to maximise long-term impact.

Experience/age: Having less than 4 years’ professional fashion design experience or are a fashion student in any year at an educational institution at the time of application. 18+

THE BRIEF

You are challenged to design a contemporary collection for a modern, fashion-forward adult who is concerned about the environment and actively seeks comfort and style whether in the city or exploring the big outdoors.

Your collection will rescue textile waste, re-using these through upcycling while reimagining fashion, which will likely influence your creativity and processes.

For the competition, it is essential that you apply the four core circular design strategies to your collection . Your understanding and application of these strategies will be taken into consideration during judging under the sustainability and innovation for the circular economy (30 marks).

THE PRIZES

There are multiple prizes on offer for the 2023 cycle with a development fund pot of HK$80,000 (US$10,000) to be distributed among the highest scoring finalists. All finalists and semi-finalists will receive educational and career enhancing prizes.

THE REDRESS DESIGN AWARD 2023 FIRST PRIZE WITH VF CORPORATION

Following their win, the First Prize winner will be invited to join the VF Corporation, one of the world’s largest apparel, footwear, and accessories companies of iconic brands including Vans®, The North Face®, Timberland® and Dickies®; to explore what it takes to be a sustainable fashion business leader. Under the mentorship of VF subject matter experts, they will gain exciting insights from across the supply chain from sourcing to product development, while deepening their skills and understanding around sustainable production and marketing.  

The first prize winner will also receive…

- A development fund of HK50,000 (US$6,400) to propel their sustainable fashion career

- A high-performance lockstitch machine and an overlock sewing machine from JUKI

- One year individual access to all areas of Bloomsbury Fashion Central, including the Fairchild Books Library and the Fashion Photography Archive*

RUNNER-UP PRIZE - THE REDRESS DESIGN AWARD 2023 MENTORSHIP WITH ORSOLA DE CASTRO

The runner-up will receive a tailored mentorship with distinguished sustainable fashion designer and competition judge, Orsola de Castro. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in sustainable fashion, Orsola has nurtured many of the pioneering names in sustainable fashion from their early designs through to their established brands.

This mentorship opportunity will give the winner expert and targeted support from wherever they are in the world through video calls and by email over a six-month period. This prize prepares the designer, their visions and collections for the competitive market of attracting fashion buyers and media – and ultimately securing success.

The runner-up will also receive…

- A development fund of HK50,000 (US$6,400).

- A high-performance lockstitch machine and an overlock sewing machine from JUKI

- 10 digital books from Bloomsbury’s Basics Fashion Design series

PEOPLE'S CHOICE PRIZE

After impressing the global public with their designs in an online vote to outshine the other 29 semi- finalists, this winner will receive a JUKI overlock sewing machine.

The People’s Choice will also receive…

- Additional promotion across Redress’ social networks

- A guaranteed place in the Grand Final

- A digital copy of a Bloomsbury book, Historical Perspectives on Sustainable Fashion by Amy Twigger Holroyd, Jennifer Farley Gordon, and Colleen Hill (publishing February 2023)

HONG KONG BEST PRIZE

Hong Kong's highest scoring designer will receive...

- A guaranteed place in the Grand Final

- A development fund of HK15,000 (US$,1,900)

- A JUKI high-performance lockstitch sewing machine

- A digital copy of the Bloomsbury book, Historical Perspectives on Sustainable Fashion by Amy Twigger Holroyd, Jennifer Farley Gordon, and Colleen Hill (publishing February 2023)  

ALL TEN FINALISTS WILL -

  • Have their designs shot in Hong Kong by a renowned photographer and styled by an influential stylist
  • Have designs showcased under the international public’s spotlight in an exhibition after the grand final concludes
  • Receive a two-hour mentorship with a sustainable fashion expert to help nurture their future career development
  • A subscription to Bloomsbury’s online portal, the Berg Fashion Library (from May to October 2023)
  • A digital copy of a Bloomsburybook, Stories of Fashion, Textiles, and Place by Leslie Davis Burns and Jeanne Carver (published October 2021)

ALL 30 SEMI-FINALISTS WILL RECEIVE -

  • Access to the Redress Design Award Alumni Network which provides regular opportunities to develop your sustainable fashion career
  • A selection of digital fashion books from Bloomsbury Publishing including A Practical Guide to Sustainable Fashion, 2nd Edition by Alison Gwilt (published July 2020), Designing Fashion's Future: Present Practice and Tactics for Sustainable Change by Alice Payne (published January 2021), and Fashion Design: The Complete Guide by John Hopkins (published October 2021)
