Markos Tranakas is an Athenian-born, London-based womenswear designer holding a BA (Hons) Fashion Design degree from the prestigious University of Westminster. His sculptor-like approach to design regards simplification as a core value, for he believes it is where true beauty lies. Seeking to re-establish the definition of elegance in a world stripped bare from it, he relies on the foundations of design to create impeccably refined pieces distinguished for their sartorial rigour and aesthetic excellence.
Striving to re-define the lost elegance of mid-twentieth century style, Markos Tranakas’ graduate collection is characterised by mathematically precise cutting and a skilful use of colour. The finest Laurent Garigue wool in vibrant tones of plum, viridian, chartreuse and marine blue was used to bring the collection’s lyrical silhouettes to life. Sharp asymmetry and curvilinearity are two main characteristics of this sinuous exploration, in which the Constructivist, Optic, and Spatialist art movements provided an abundant source of inspiration; Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo, Victor Vasarely and the sliced canvases of Lucio Fontana are all referenced in this striking statement of utmost sophistication. The collection was featured at the University of Westminster's graduate show held in June 2024.
