This film uses animation and sound to symbolise the development of ‘home’. All the sound is sourced from the live photos and videos shown in the film. Memorable moments are held and the sounds from them are imparted onto the soundtrack, representing the development of home over time. Sounds in the U.K. start off uncomfortable as the experience of being away from my first home, California, was difficult. Sounds from California are marked by a recording of my Dad practising the piano and the soundscape is soft and nostalgic. Over time, the U.K. sounds become more pleasing as memories are created, and eventually merge with the sounds from California to represent becoming comfortable and at home here, too. This is also represented visually through the U.S. and U.K. image sequences coming closer together on screen, as ‘home’ feels less far apart. Colourful symbols and paths are animated throughout to show journeys and transportation types as I’ve lived and travelled in various parts of London. Steve Reich’s phasing experiments provide inspiration for the way new rhythms are generated as memories are introduced. This project was in collaboration with sound designer Leon Radschinski-Gorman.
