My practice sits in-between spaces, as do I.My mixed-race background has informed my explorative approach to design which I use to better understand the world around me. It gives me the ability to look at the world through different lenses and position myself in different roles. I am a multidisciplinary designer whose practice shifts between type, print, moving image, and the intersection between design and tech. I have an ambitious and thoughtful approach to design which results in both conceptually and materially experimental outcomes. Through my work I try to create a dialogue between mediums and people, in order to bridge the gaps.
‘Systema Squiggles’ is a computationally produced display type, given shape by language. The typeface is created from letterforms that are selected from a random set of squiggles, based on their similarity to Latin letters. The random squiggles are created using p5.js to create a randomised generative algorithmic composition. Those squiggles are then subjected to the constraints of typographic systems, which dictate the appearance of the letterforms to create a functional typeface. “Until letters come together into words, no meaning can be located: the gap between the ‘signifier’ and the ‘signified’ doesn’t appear.” Language gives shape to and defines these otherwise abstract forms. “Language is not fixed, but is rather a dynamic system. Language evolves and changes... [it] grows and organises itself from the bottom up in an organic way.” The typeface mirrors this; it can be continuously remade using different forms created by the same computational system, evolving each time.
