My starting point for my bachelor collection was my trip to Skagen, a village in the most Northern part of Denmark in the summer of 2021. From the late 1870s until the turn of the century, a group of Scandinavian artists went to Skagen every summer, making it an artist colony. It was the light that merged the sea and the sky especially during the evening “blue hour” that drew them there. That is the reason why they were called the “painters of the light”. I was fascinated by the way these artists fully embraced the local area as an artist colony and escapist refugium to create what this place offered to them as inspiration. In our current worrisome times, I felt very much drawn to this escapist life in a beautiful calm place surrounded by nature. Anna Ancher, who became a pioneering female artist at a time when women were not permitted to study at Denmark's Royal Academy, was of special interest to me. Her husband’s portrait of her in reform dress (Coming Home from Market, 1902) inspired me in terms of silhouette and garment. To her, wearing this type of dress at that time must have signified her freedom from conventional gender roles. Furthermore, I researched the reform dress designs by Emilie Flöge and the Wiener Werkstätte. The third outstanding female artist that inspired me was Sonia Delaunay-Terk.
