About
Rui is a Chinese-Canadian illustrator who graduated from OCAD University with a BFA in Illustration and an MFA in Illustration Practice from MICA.
Rui’s strengths are in both traditional and digital art, she is extremely interested in narrative illustration and world-building. Rui has also found her love in handcrafting such wood carving and tufting, she aims to bring life to her 2D creations.
'The Wonderland Within' is a narrative world-building project that showcases a story about a little girl, Bea, and a little world she's created. Now, Bea is in her late 20s, struggling to write her new book in her room. The next second, she is suddenly transported into a fantasy world. She finds herself turned into her childhood form and soon realizes that this world mirrors the fantasy story she wrote as a child. As the narrative unfolds, Bea embarks to explore this magical realm, encountering characters and places inspired by her childhood imagination. The thesis show not only showcases 2D illustrations but also incorporates 3D handcrafts, from wood sculptures to tufting carpets to stuffed toys. The gallery space invites the audiences to be fully immersive in the fantasy world.
